Crafting Democratic Futures: Horizons Beyond High School

Description:

The Crafting Democratic Futures grant, in collaboration with community partners, aims to “level the playing field” with Horizons Beyond High School. It will do so by preemptively identifying and addressing the needs and challenges of African American and Hispanic students who have historically been underrepresented in education and work settings in the US, particularly at predominantly white institutions. By providing a holistic array of education, growth-oriented training, and practical support networks, the cohort of 10-15 selected NLHS students and their families will move along a directed continuum in preparation for post-high school educational and professional opportunities.

This two-week program will include morning sessions focused on career and college preparation and afternoon sessions focused on soft skills and community building. The project will also include breakout sessions tailored to students’ stated interests and goals. Additionally, the program will bring informational speakers and facilitators from local agency partners, volunteers, former New London High School students, and Connecticut College students to expand the network of support services for NLHS students. For more information, click on this link to see the detailed agenda.

The project also seeks to create a sustainable partnership between New London High School and Connecticut College to support future cohorts. The Crafting Democratic Futures grant will support the project, including a $700 stipend for high school students who complete the program. The project stakeholders consist of the Crafting Democratic Futures grant research team, the New London School District, Higher Edge College Preparatory Program, the Holleran Center for Community Action at Connecticut College, and Connecticut College’s New London Scholars program. The NLSD will provide transportation for participating students from the high school to Connecticut College. NLHS students will be asked to complete a simple application form and obtain caregiver or guardian permission to participate.
